Tower Heist

SIMPLY ANALYSIS: Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick, Michael Pena, Robert Downey SR. (oh yea). Another of one Ben Stiller’s less character crazy comedies and it contains a great list of comic actors to fill the roles. It has it’s moments when it can tickle your funny bone and Eddie Murphy in particular is quite convincing in a role i haven’t seen him take up before. It’s a very easy film to watch and would be perfect for a young family to sit down with. It’s one of those subtly funny films that doesn’t use over-dramatic characters to make the joke so blatantly obvious that you understand it’s being done on purpose so it becomes funny again, Stiller’s character is quite similar to his role in ‘There’s Something About Mary’ if that makes it simpler. I don’t think any-one’s gonna call this a ‘must-see’ movie but it’s a well put together, easy on the eyes comedy to enjoy. On an irrelevant side-note it would be a good present to buy for any kid under the age of 14 if you’re at a loss this year. RATING 6/10

Psycho (1960)

SIMPLE ANALYSIS: Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh. Here we go, yet another film that echoes through film history due to it’s written brilliance. Just like with the more recently made ‘American Psycho’ and ‘Fight Club’ this film contains challenging ideals that reverberate within you for weeks after the film has ended. It’s about time i found a new man-crush in acting to compete with my admiration for Brad Pitt and my God did Anthony Perkins burst through the gates. The genuine tone in everything he says and the awkward calmness of him is utterly mesmerising. Without praising him too far i have to add It is so unbelievably obvious he is completely consumed in his role so if for no other reason watch this film just to watch this artist in full stride. Alfred Hitchcock’s psycho may be an old film, for those of you who take pleasure in modern cinematography and don’t fancy traipsing back through the ages, but i truly believe this film is timeless and the fact it’s in black and white shouldn’t put you off watching it. This really is a unique film to sit in front of and you shouldn’t expect to follow the usual story line that horror/thriller films display. Please, please, please dive into this magnificently put together dream of an artistic performance. If nothing else you will be able to walk around all smug for having watched a film that the majority of people under the age of 40 living today would not give the time to honour themselves with and you may even be able to spread this cultural gold. RATING 8.5/10

The Green Mile

SIMPLE ANALYSIS: Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, James Cromwell, Jeffrey DeMunn. asdfgh nbbv Sorry, just was just wiping my man (at this point probably more baby) tears off my keyboard as this is the most tear-jerking film I have ever had the honour of viewing. God damn, 1999 was a historic year for filmography, and this should be way up at the top of any list of all time greats, unless you’re talking about chick flicks. If you’re strong enough to be able to withstand the roller-coaster of emotion that this film rockets at you then I implore you to ‘ride the lightning.’ Outstanding acting talent with absolutely no exceptions and the storyline is absolutely impeccable. I mean seriously i’m sitting here still in recoil at how electrifyingly beautiful this film is, so much so that I keep on having to slap myself to concentrate on writing this review. I doubt you will have ever seen a film like this in your life as I know I haven’t and I really have seen quite a fair few! If you are looking for a film to over-power you and really push your emotions to the limit then your journey should end here. Be cautious about approaching this film if you are after a light, easy going film to watch when you want something to be playing in the background so you don’t look too obvious about inviting a girl or boy over as i guarantee whatever aspirations you previously had about how the night would go would soon disappear! You may even forget any-one else is in the room. Greatest respects to the recently deceased Michael Clarke Duncan for putting on the performance of a lifetime and co-operating so phenomenally with the rest of the cast, especially Tom Hanks. We lost a true acting talent too early but if nothing else in his shining career and life he has left an eternal mark on Western culture with this gift of a film. RATING: 9/10
